"AT THIS MOMENT I AM..." ESSAY
|
This was the first writing piece we wrote in Ms. Shirk's class. We were told to write freely about who we are, what we feel, or anything that described exactly who we are in that moment. Ms. Shirk gave us this writing assignment because she wanted to see where our class was as writers, and to also learn about her new students so she could get to know them a bit better through their writing.

ANTHROPOLIGICAL CASE STUDY
|
For this piece of writing, we had to interview a classmate and ask them deep questions to really get to know them better. While writing this we had to write in the tone that would be describing the entire atmosphere and "feel" of the interview along with all of the information we conducted in the interview.

ORIGINAL POEM
We were learning a bit about poetry and how to write a powerful poem so in this poem we had to apply all that we had learned about writing poems here. In my poem, I personified anger and was speaking directly to it referring to it as a match.
This was the first time I had ever wrote poetry on my own and felt confident in what I had written. I always thought poets had to fit a certain personality or appearance type. As I wrote and performed my own poem, I thought that I had done a very good job and accomplished something big. I realized that since I was expressing myself, there was nothing consider wrong or right.

PROMISE TO LIFE POEM
While writing this poem, we had to write revolved around the theme of "My Promise to Life" as a group. We all decided to take the perspective of people that are "trapped" by society and afraid to show people their true selves.

This project seemed to be the most difficult because we had to create a poem in a group of six people. It was very hard to collaborate with 5 other very different minds because at times our personalities clashed. In the writing process we discussed things that interest and it was a very different, but then we talked about what we wanted to write and we all chose the same type of topic which was societies opinions.

VIGNETTES
These vignettes were inspired by the book "The House on Mango Street" and the authors writing style. I took what the authors writing style and tried to apply it to my own while writing my own 5 vignettes. I didn't make them all in a particular order of how they happened because in the book, all of the vignettes are mixed up. My vignettes don't represent anything in particular from the order that they are in, they are just memories that I love thinking about.
This was a challenge to me because I felt like I had to try to live up to with authors writing, even though it isn't my favorite way to write. I do enjoy reading the book and the authors vignettes, but I don't personally think it is for me. I find it really hard for me to copy or take inspiration from other peoples writing because I like to think of myself as my own writer.

Claim Evidence Reason (CER)
Reflection
I think that doing Claim Evidence Reason practice in class was very beneficial for myself because it helped me work on being descriptive when proving my points in a paper. I know that I will be writing many more papers in this format throughout the next nears to come so I want to be sure that I grasped the concept early, rather than struggling through later on as the material only becomes harder.
Proposal for Movie
DescriptionIn this independent reading assignment, we wrote a proposal to get a novel that we read turned into a movie. In this piece of writing, we had to assign roles for each characters, explain where it would be set, and why the story itself is worth of being put onto the big screen.
|
ReflectionI personally did not like this assignment because the book that I chose has about seven main characters so I felt like there were too many to cast without making it super long. I shortened the piece and cut out some characters so the proposal would be easier to follow.

Commentary to Snapshot Comic Strip
DescriptionFor your Independent Reading assignment you will be creating a comic strip that depicts one important scene from your book. You will also be writing a commentary about your comic strip explaining the scene, why you chose the scene and an explanation of why you depicted the scene the way you did artistically.
|
Reflection
Writing the commentary for my snapshot comic strip was an interesting process for me because I put myself in the mindset of a person who has never read the book while I wrote the commentary. This helped me make sure I was being thorough and descriptive because I had to make sure someone who didn't know anything about the scene could understand it.
Character Sketch
Reflection
I enjoyed writing the character sketch because it was my own creativity. I went off of the information I already knew about my character from what the author had stated in the book, then I made things up that would make sense to be traits of my character. This was my favorite writing assignment out of the four because there was no right or wrong way to write about your character since they were not real, and because we were given the freedom to use our creativity. Letter to the Author
I took a lot of time to complete this assignment because I wanted to be very thoughtful when explaining how this book connects to the real world and has affected the way I view the world. In the beginning I struggled with deciding where to start, but once I organized my ideas and gathered what points I wanted to get across, I was on a roll. I got so into my writing that I feel like I almost wrote too much. I am very satisfied about how my letter to the author came out.
